Preserve the Barrie Collingwood Railway
The Meaford Subdivision and Beeton Spur, collectively known as the "Barrie-Collingwood Railway" is currently under threat of abandonment and removal. I am currently suggesting that even if rail service is suspended on the line it should be preserved for future use, weather it be freight service or passenger service. As of writing this the City of Barrie is expected to grow by over 100,000 people over the next 20-30 years, with the surrounding communities and other cities in the County of Simcoe. With this our transit and shipping needs will grow greatly which these rails and/or the corridors they currently occupy could help greatly with. But if the corridors are allowed to be abandoned and developed on we will lose this opportunity as we lost the opportunity for transportation for goods and people to and from Orillia and to build a new corridor would be very costly and require expropriation and demolition on a large scale, which would be unnecessary if we still has the rails. To destroy the corridor would be a short sighted decision, for the sake of our future as both a city and a county we should prevent the destruction of this valuable asset to our region.
