Establish an official Arts and Culture Committee
The City's decision to close the Georgian Theatre without any consultation has revealed that the arts and culture community needs an official committee. The committee must consist of Councillors, staff from the Recreation and Culture Department and the Economic and Creative Development Department, and local arts leaders.
The City of Barrie once had a committee so there already is a precedent for it. The reason it was dismantled was when the Culture Department was created and the committee was no longer necessary. Now that that department is gone, the Committee must return.
Establishing an Arts and Culture Committee is the most significant gesture the City can take to provide the accountability, transparency, and communication that the people of Barrie clearly demand. It would also provide a formal (and public) forum through which the cultural community can raise concerns, flag potential issues (such as the ramifications of losing the Georgian Theatre), and present ideas to the City's councillors.
