  1. reallocate at least 10% of the police's funding to community support

Police received $56 million in 2019.

That’s nearly 8x what we spend on Paramedic Services.
More than 33x what we spend on Public Health.
Almost 50x what we spend on Long Term Care and Seniors Services.

Our tax dollars are not infinite. Giving police such a disproportionate amount means we’re NOT giving other services the funding they need.

We need a more holistic approach to keeping our city and its residents safe.

Reallocation would take just 10% of the money that currently goes to police services and use that to invest in other programs that also support the people in…

  2. I am opposed to the City of Barrie building a sports complex along the South Shore. Build it elsewhere. Leave nature alone to be enjoyed.

I am opposed to the City of Barrie building a sports complex on the South Shore area of Kempenfelt Bay. That area is a semi-natural piece of prime property that is enjoyed by countless citizens, and it should be preserved as such for future generations. Build a sports complex elsewhere but not on land that is contested by indigenous groups, nor adjacent to a waterway that is environmentally fragile.

At the September 17th Sport Events/Facilities Advisory Committee meeting, the committee was notified of this suggestion and provided a document including all comments recorded as of “Under Review” status classification.

Advisory committees (http://bit.ly/2JpH9JC) ensure opportunities for public input into community decision-making. The majority of Advisory committees report to a Reference Committee of Council and meet on a monthly basis, or at the call of the Chair.

The schedule of meetings is available at http://barrie.legistar.com and meetings are open to the public.

  3. Make Johnsons Beach a DOG FRIENDLY BEACH PARK

As we have no dog friendly beaches and this end of the city has no dog park near or easily accessible to those unable to walk a steep trail I would like it considered that Johnson's beach is the perfect location to designate a dog friendly beach. It's small, remote from other beaches enough that it would cause no issues and yet easily accessible to everyone by walk, driving or bus. Leash laws could still be intact which means no fencing would be needed while allowing dogs to cool down especially on those severely hot days.
    Poop and scoop laws…

Thank you for your participation in the City’s suggestion forum. We are sorry this update is being provided so late; the staff memo linked below was missed.

A staff memo from the Engineering Department was circulated to City Council (General Committee) on January 7, 2019. The memo was in response to two suggestions on this forum: “Make Johnsons Beach a DOG FRIENDLY BEACH PARK” and “Open a waterfront dog park”. Please refer to the full memo: https://bit.ly/3129NN9 .

In short, “as per the recommendations of the 2013 Barrie Waterfront and Marina Strategic Plan, when the Gables 2008 Master Plan is updated, staff will revisit whether this park is a viable location for a dog water access beach.” An update to the Gables Master Plan is forecast for 2024.

As per the established process for suggestions that reach 500 votes (Under Review), City councillors had three possible decisions in response…

  4. Allandale station turned market

Turn allandale train station become a market open daily. Something similar to Vancouver's Granville market. Would attract locals and tourists and bring people and business to the unused building. Cafes, shops, etc

A staff memo from Planning Services was recently circulated to City Council (General Committee), providing a status update on the Year Round Market Business Plan. The memo includes a summary of the results associated with a recent online customer survey and information regarding the suggestion that the market be located at the Allandale Train Station.

The full memo is available to read via the May 16th circulation list at http://barrie.legistar.com (direct link to memo: http://bit.ly/1TZi88s).

In short, the memo outlines reasons for focusing on a downtown location, and the two downtown locations selected for further investigation. As these investigations will get underway, this status of this suggestion has been updated to “Received for Information” as no further action will be taken at this time regarding a market at Allandale Station. We’ll continue to provide updates via the forum regarding the implementation of a year-round market; voters will be auto-notified…

  5. open a waterfront dog park

Designate 100m of waterfront east of South Shore Centre to off-leash dog access. This will promote safe, controlled, and active use of the waterfront for citizens and their dogs during warm summer months. Currently, dogs have NO legal access to Lake Simcoe in this city.

  6. Build a splash pad southwest end.

We need a splash pad at the southwestsouthwest end of Barrie. Sometimes it is difficult to cross the hwy to get to the lake, and Lampman Lane is the only other splash pad we have. I suggest Holly Rec Centre park.

A staff memo from the Engineering Department was circulated to City Council (General Committee) on January 7, 2019. Please refer to the full memo: https://bit.ly/3fznPtE . In short, staff concluded that “Once the Outdoor Recreation Facility Study has been completed in 2019, and the Hewitt’s Recreation Centre splash pad has been opened, staff propose to re-evaluate the splash pad service level recommendations. Upon completion of the re-evaluation, any proposed projects that were identified will be included into the capital planning process.”

  7. Make parking at beaches free for all

We need to keep parking free for centennial beach. They bring massive amount of tourist dollars. Without it, our tax dollars WILL go up because of this loss of revenue. It is not non residents that leave behind garbage, it is the locals and the city who fail to pick up the garbage and thus the cans overflow and the wild life spreads it.

We shouldn't have to pay for the minority few who do not see reality to the costs this will cause. Making none residents pay for parking is a foolish idea as they will just go to…

We appreciate the suggestion, however this decision was recently made by Council in hopes of increasing our parking reserves and to prevent the tax payers from subsidizing parking operations.

We will certainly review its effects on business, but seeing as there was a cost to implement the program, the decision will not likely be reversed in the near future.

There is really no such thing as “Free” parking because there is always a cost to maintaining the lots. Council gets to decide how this maintenance is paid for – either by the user or tax base. Before July, the tax payers were paying to maintain the lots. The new visitor paid parking model is taking the maintenance cost out of the tax base and asking non-resident users to pay.

We constantly monitor and analyze our numbers, but Council would have to recommend the change back to free parking. For more…
