Allowing a Chicken Rental Program for Residents
While the city of Barrie unfortunately turned down residents having their own backyard chickens in 2021, I would like to make a proposal/offer a solution.
Myself and a few others, that reside outside of Barrie, offer "Chicken Coop Rentals" to areas that allow chickens. This is a great program that allows people to raise chickens from spring until fall, without worrying about winter care. I deliver the coop, 2-3 chickens, feed, and bedding in May, and pick up the chickens and supplies in October.
Some positive notes that would make keeping chickens easier within city boundaries:
Less smell: the design of my coops allows for optimal airflow, and they are designed so that they need frequent cleaning. The bedding and manure can be sent off weekly with the green bin collection.
Temporarily keeping chickens vs having a permanent coop means you are less likely to attract rodents. Rodents are content during the summer months, when food is more abundant everywhere they go. It is in winter when they seek warm places like houses, garages, barns, or chicken coops. Having the rental coops and chickens removed before winter begins will keep rodent populations to a minimum. Bonus; did you know that most chickens will eat mice? There's some rodent control in itself!
Happy residents! Barrietoday.com shared on May 16, 2021 that 515 residents voted in favor of backyard chickens. While my small program can't offer services to every single one of these residents, it would at least make a few of them happy.
I would be more than happy to discuss this further with the right people, to make a plan, and discuss any possibility of by-law changes that potentially allow chicken coop rentals, or guidelines for keeping 2-4 hens within Barrie. I can offer experience of chicken care that will make sure this movement is a success.

Why is this still an issue? Other cities in the area allow for chicken, just let us have chickens!

Such a great idea!
