Install lighting for hockey/skating at Strabane Park

I propose that the City of Barrie install low height, low to medium light output solar lights around the tennis courts at Strabane Park. These lights should be directional and aimed at the tennis courts/ice area. The intent would be to provide some lighting for hockey or skating during the winter. Tennis players have the advantage of long hours of daylight.. Ice rink users do not. Solar lights, similar to the one already in the park, could easily be installed and overall would be cheaper than installing wired lights.

The 2015 Capital Budget has been approved, and includes the installation of an LED light at Strabane Park for lighting of the volunteer ice rink. The light is expected to be installed this summer.

Thanks to all who engaged with this suggestion and helped ensure community interest was reflected in the vote count! The suggestion was a factor in staff’s decision to include it in the proposed 2015 Budget & Business Plan.

UPDATE: The Strabane lighting is currently being considered in the development of the 2015 Capital Budget and Business Plan. Please refer to the staff report (August 2014, http://bit.ly/104WMzO) that established the responsibilities of the volunteers and the criteria to be used for new infrastructure requests.

UPDATE: The staff report on the Volunteer Ice Rinks did not go to Council prior to its summer break; the report will likely come before Council in August 2014. Staff will be initiating a budget request for the Strabane lighting, for consideration through the 2015 Business Plan process. Staff cannot guarantee it will be approved.

We can ensure that although the staff report has not yet gone forward this doesn’t mean that staff are not continuing to act on the issue! Will continue to post updates as they become available.

A Neighbourhood Volunteer Outdoor Ice Rink Program Update is now currently under review by City staff. The Update aims to formalize the volunteer and City staff responsibilities and the process for establishing new infrastructure improvements associated with winter outdoor ice rinks (both new lighting and water services to establish new ice rink locations), to ensure requests are prioritized and effectively provided.

This proposed formalized program will complement the Parks Lighting Policy approved by Council in 2008 that guides the City in determining the needs for park lighting (http://media.legistar.com/barrie/2008/ENG047-080630.pdf).

If the Program Update is approved, the request for lighting within Strabane Park will considered as part of this proposed program process and potentially included as part of the 2015 Business Plan.

It is anticipated that the Neighbourhood Volunteer Outdoor Ice Rink Program Update will come before Council in June 2014.

There is no reason not to have lights. Kids (and adults) need somewhere safe they can play and should be encouraged to play OUT SIDE and get exercise.

Splendid idea! I have voted. We have a rink, tennis court across the road. The city does an excellent job maintaining it, and the kids play hockey until the lights go out. It's a good way for them to get exercise and enjoy good fun.

The mod brings up the topic of the Barrie farmers market and then Chris tries to blame me for it. At the same time he tries to spin it "for the children" when the mod aka chris Is the one ranting here and then posted a message that is far from truthful. If you wanted this to be about the lights and the rink. Why did YOU Chris aka the mod, bring up the farmers market right in the thread???

Please do this! So sad that my (and our) kids can't use this rink after school in the winter by approx 16:30. It would get so much more use with lights! Please!!

Fight for your own cause and stick to your own thread. Why do you feel the need to interfere with something that is ultimately for children and has nothing to do with you. It's actually quite strange!!!! We have asked that your comments be removed. And for the record I'm a rocker or a greaser not a mod. I am assuming you were making references to the WHO's quadrophenia!!! Lights on the rink for our kids would be amazing and that is all this is about. That's all we are trying to say!!!!!

Hi Ken. I have no problems with you or this idea. It's the way this forum is managed I have a problem with. This is a great idea and I hope the best for you. However, if the forum is ran this way. Who's to say the next "idea" which could be a disaster but has the vote of the mods wont get risen? Just to let everyone know. I did not create the other ideas but I feel everyone should be entitled with a voice and not accused of fraud when the activity of the mods are suspicious themselves. Especially given the history of some of the locations they are suggesting. I wish you the best of luck in hopes you get those lights, hadn't I not been maxed out on my own votes I too would vote for it.

It's just the management of the mods and how quickly this has risen is all. This idea would have gone a long long way had it not been spiked
