  1. Cancel Canada Day

On Thursday, May 27, the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc First Nation confirmed that the remains of 215 Indigenous children were found buried in an unmarked mass grave at the Kamloops Residential School. Following this announcement, and subsequent announcements of unmarked mass graves of Indigenous children, multiple municipalities across Canada have announced the cancellation of Canada Day events. This includes at least 14 municipalities in 6 provinces and territories.

This decision has been made out of respect for Indigenous families and communities who have had loved ones stolen from them as well as survivors of these ‘schools.’ It has also been made…

As previously outlined, this suggestion has remained classified as Under Review due to the referral of the June 28 memo for discussion at the August 9 General Committee meeting.

At the August 9 City Council meeting, the following motion passed:

    1. That staff in the Recreation and Culture Services Department be directed to engage on an annual basis with partners such as Beausoleil First Nation, Rama First Nation, Georgina Island First Nation, and other local First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples and organizations, including the Barrie Native Friendship Centre and Barrie Area Native Advisory Circle, to explore and implement July 1st activities that include local oral histories, cultural celebrations and any other educational elements as recommended by the Indigenous community.

    2. That the General Manager of Community and Corporate Services and staff in the Human Resources Department engage with local Indigenous Nations, peoples, and organizations on the implementation of the…

  2. Stop the Degradation of East Barrie Neighbourhoods by Absentee Landlord Rental/Boarding Houses

Houses owned by absentee landlords are increasing in East Barrie and are impacting existing family homes in the East End. There are too many dilapidated properties, overcrowded rentals, and poorly managed boarding houses in this area resulting in noise issues, parking problems and a reduced quality of life for surrounding residents.

Quickly pass bylaws to regulate and license absentee landlords, prevent the further proliferation of boarding houses and to pro-actively enforce parking, zoning and property standard bylaws.

As an alternative to boarding houses, encourage the development of bona fide (student) residences in more suitable locations near Georgian College ie: Bell…

The 2022 Budget was approved by Council on Monday, December 6. It includes funding for four additional by-law enforcement officers. This will allow for additional hours of service to respond to yard maintenance issues, public parking issues, nuisance matters etc. Response levels and the achievement of timely response will be improved, and hours of service will be increased.

As outlined in our previously posted update, consideration of this funding was undertaken in place of an amendment to the Business Licensing By-law 2006-266 re a pilot project that would require absentee landlords to obtain a business licence. To report by-law violations please call (705) 739-4241 at the time of occurrence. You may need to leave a message—Enforcement Services staff retrieve messages from this number 7 days/week, 7:30am–11pm from April through November and 24/7 from December through…

  3. Install Rainbow Crosswalks for the 2018 Pride Celebration in the City of Barrie

    You’re beautiful, Barrie!
And you’re getting better every year... our beloved little bedroom city is more cultured and diverse- more inclusive and comfortable- than ever! Nowhere is this more evident than in the growing Barrie Pride organization, and the LGBTQ2S+ community around which it is built.

We’ve come a long way! Thank you for growing alongside us, and for helping us develop a meaningful relationship to our city: with more important support and services; a better network of businesses; and a warm community of wonderful, compassionate people.

There is something you can do though. One small gesture that would make…

Parking is free downtown until September 8, 2020! The suspension of paid downtown parking is one of the many actions outlined in Barrie’s COVID-19 Economic Recovery Action Plan, and supports the Downtown Economic Recovery Plan by providing incentive for customers to access downtown businesses, and provides financial relief for downtown owners, staff, and customers. Learn more about the plan at www.investbarrie.ca.

The suggestion is being classified as Completed as it’s being adopted in some capacity.

  5. Ban Circuses that still use exotic animals as performing acts.

Abusing and exploiting animals in the "name" of PROFIT is outrageous!
In order to get these animals to perform unnatural, painful, and stressful acts, trainers use blow torches, whips, shock them with taser guns and beat them with bullhooks, that are jabbed into their sensitive skin, on their thigh, behind their ears, even jabbing inside their mouths.
These Elephants, Tigers, Bears etc. endure severe confinement, hardship and brutality. Between acts these ENDANGERED SPECIES are kept chained up like bicycles or confined to cramped pens, which aren't large enough for them to turn around.
Dozens of Countries have Nation Wide Bans…

The Business Licensing By-law 2006-266 will be amended to add the following new provision under operating criteria associated with the “circus or similar show” licensing category: “Notwithstanding the above, the use or display of wildlife or exotic animals shall be prohibited.” The consolidate by-law will soon be available at www.barrie.ca/bylaws.

  6. Install lighting for hockey/skating at Strabane Park

I propose that the City of Barrie install low height, low to medium light output solar lights around the tennis courts at Strabane Park. These lights should be directional and aimed at the tennis courts/ice area. The intent would be to provide some lighting for hockey or skating during the winter. Tennis players have the advantage of long hours of daylight.. Ice rink users do not. Solar lights, similar to the one already in the park, could easily be installed and overall would be cheaper than installing wired lights.

The 2015 Capital Budget has been approved, and includes the installation of an LED light at Strabane Park for lighting of the volunteer ice rink. The light is expected to be installed this summer.

Thanks to all who engaged with this suggestion and helped ensure community interest was reflected in the vote count! The suggestion was a factor in staff’s decision to include it in the proposed 2015 Budget & Business Plan.
