It is possible that more bins are necessary but likewise the implementation of technologies to better manage and utilise existing capacity would also be prudent. Other North American Cities are implementing sensors connected on IoT platforms to operate 'on demand' collection which focuses resources to the high use locations. The simple sensors mounted in the bins serve to give real-time status of levels and allows pro-active routing of collection resources. This reduces excess accumulation in or around bins, takes account of seasonality and event loading, and typically reduces the cost of operations for the City by optimizing resources. The future is SMART!
