I suggest the City ...

Pay homeless to pick up city garbage

Pay the homeless to help clean up the city...give them benefits...and help set them up warmth transitional housing....saw a video on Facebook where they are doing this in numerous cities and it is working for both the people and the city. Let’s lirerally clean up our streets!

    1) this doesn’t address the real problem of overconsumption. The city has a garbage problem not a litter problem. I wonder if some homeless think ‘all employed people should lighten up and fix their own problems’
    2) panhandling is not exclusively practiced by the unemployed... I see no difference from getting asked for donations at the supermarket or from firefighters in the parking lot
    3) poverty is not a career choice. Those who abuse the system would already have assessed dignity which is why scraping by is preferred to a 50 hr week...still scrapping by

I think this is a great idea. For many homeless, holding down a real job is a real challenge based on their circumstances. This gives them the option of making money in a way they can be proud of, if they so choose. I often see homeless collecting cans from blue bins or roadways just to make a little money and I suspect they would be thrilled if this were another option available to them. Who knows..it may even be a window for some of them to other opportunities.
Exploitation is when you treat someone unfairly or somehow take advantage of them which I don’t see in this situation as long as it is implemented properly. However, I would be interested to hear other’s perspective on this.

I think those who think it’s actually a good idea to exploit the most vulnerable should be the ones that pick up the garbage. Such as sheila there

How about providing proper help for the homeless such as opening those addiction centres. You’re “idea” is nothing more than exploiting them. I don’t care if it’s done in “other areas”. It’s funny you think this “idea” is acceptable yet you bash refugees and whine we aren’t doing “enough for our homeless. Yet here you are exploiting them

And David if you’re so offended by my suggestion than what’s yours? Make suggestions to help with the problem instead of criticizing others wanting to make a difference.

It is not a bad idea it’s been done in other cities and it works. Do your research.

Great idea! Give them something to do other than beg for money on the streets! This may also give them some dignity in the sense that they are being productive!
