We need crossing guards throughout the City of Barrie.
It is unbelievable that a city like our does not already have this in place. All crossings that are frequently used by elementary school children should have crossing guards in the morning , during lunch and after school. It is also suggested that this be a paid position primarily taken by seniors.
The City does not currently have a School Crossing Guard Program. A November 2015 staff report (https://barrie.legistar.com/View.ashx?M=F&ID=4129470&GUID=35AADD59-969C-48BA-A0BE-3B79E2B0B0DA) outlined the results of an investigation into the feasibility of implementing such a program. The matter was referred to the Infrastructure, Investment and Development Services Committee (www.barrie.ca/committees) for discussion.
In January 2016, it was decided that the implementation of a School Crossing Guard Program will be considered by General Committee at such time as a financial partner representing 50% of full costs of the Program is identified. Councillors’ discussion on the matter (starting at 1:17:00) is available to view, as filmed by Rogers TV: https://www.rogerstv.com/media?lid=237&rid=23&sid=5748&gid=243624&Mode2=Video
